Welcome to Canon Wood Company

My name is James, and that pretty lady on my right is my wife Julie. I started Canon Wood in 2024 and I'm still kind of surprised by it.

Woodworking wasn’t always the plan. For 15 years, my life revolved around medicine. In 2011, I was an EMT, working in an Atlanta emergency room. And when I wasn't in the ER, I was traveling the world, using medicine as a means to help people in unique places—living on a charity hospital ship in Sierra Leone, training medics fighting ISIS in Iraq, working with a remote medical team in Indonesia, and delivering babies in an OB/GYN clinic in Uganda.

In 2015, I became a Physician Assistant. Right out of school, I started working in the Intensive Care Unit at a major Atlanta hospital, which is where I met Julie, who was working there as a nurse. After getting married in 2020, we dove into an inch-by-inch of our home during the pandemic, learning dozens and dozens of new skills and techniques.

That time was so special to us. It was, somehow, a haven from the COVID-ridden ICU that we worked in together. I fell in love with building and began to realize I had a knack for woodworking.

We started our family in that renovated home and we haven’t been able to stop building since.

Canon Wood Company was born in 2024 when I realized that, while I loved saving lives, medicine also meant being surrounded by an awful lot of sickness and loss. After making it through COVID, I needed something lighter –– something life-giving –– to give my time to. At the risk of sounding cheesy, working with wood makes my heart come alive in ways I never expected. Creating tables that become the heart of a home has been some of the most fulfilling, joyful work I’ve ever done.

I know how important a dining table can be—the place where you enjoy meals with family and friends, birthdays are celebrated, and laughter and tears are shared together.
